How to Approach Selling With Social Networking
You can use social networking for all kinds of things, not only for staying in touch with friends, family, and people who work in the same industry that you do, but also for promoting your business. You can even use it for things like latex mattress sales. But, you don’t approach social networking the same way that you would a PPC campaign. What you want to do differently is to interact with a group of people that are like-minded. Join some groups on Facebook, follow some people on Twitter, and don’t forget the latest and greatest Google Plus. Be truly social first, and get to know other people and their interests by using these mediums.
ROI with Facebook or Google Plus
In the beginning, it’s going to be really hard to figure out what your ROI is using Google Plus or Facebook for your business. Give yourself some time to learn how it’s done. Follow some people who have interests like you do, and see what they have done to get the word out about what they are marketing. You have to be careful because you don’t want to come across to a group that you have joined as only being interested in selling them something. You have to have good input into the conversations and the sharing that goes on. You need to develop a sincere interest in the people you are communicating with. Until they feel comfortable with you and know that you care about what they are doing, they won’t really care anything about what you have to present.
When the time comes for you to let them know that you sell latex mattresses, because you have already paved the way by being a part of the community, they will have questions for you about what a latex mattress is probably (if they haven’t heard of one before) and what it could do for them. They may even give you a referral or two.
Social Networks Create Relationships
That’s what social networks are all about, though, is breaking the ice and finding new relationships and new avenues to get the word out without blatantly being a salesperson that is only interested in making money, and couldn’t care less about what anybody else is interested in. Of course, you do want your social networking to pay off for you, and it can, but keep in mind that it is a lot different than selling to somebody who is already ready to buy what you have. Social networking is a way to communicate, to make relationships, to learn, to have fun, and if eventually you are able to introduce your product and make a sale, that’s great. But don’t step on people’s toes and have the wrong intentions as you do so.

Social Networking Signals
Currently Google is ramping up the use of social signals more and more in their search algorithm. These social signals are coming from sites like Twitter, Facebook, and now Google’s very own entrance with the Google +1.
If you are doing business online and need more exposure within the search engines and higher rankings it is very important that you begin implementing these signals into your own websites and becoming more active on social networking sites.
Backlinks As Social Signals
Googles algorithm originally relied heavily on backlinks but over time that has become a less effective overall way to rank a website on popularity due to the huge backlinks market that was created. An industry of link building was built and website owners started to game the search engines as much as possible. Google has greatly increased quality standards making onsite SEO a much more important factor and social signals from sites that are popular among the greater crowd like Facebook can now weigh in and influence the rankings of a website.
